Caterpillar Energy Solutions Supports Environmental Conservation Project in Africa, Compensating Carbon Emissions from the Website of the MWM Brand
Mannheim, May 5, 2022
To make the website of the MWM more sustainable and to reduce its carbon footprint, Caterpillar Energy Solutions supports a sustainable hydroelectric project in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The ClimatePartner-certified project helps to offset unavoidable carbon emissions resulting from the website “mwm.net” and the energy blog “mwm-energieblog.de“. By supporting the carbon offset project, Caterpillar Energy Solutions offsets a total of 391 kg of carbon emissions a year for the product brand MWM.
Clean Hydroelectric Energy for Households and Small Business in Africa
The hydroelectric project makes use of the flow of Rutshuru River in Virunga National Park in order to produce sustainable energy in the Matebe run-of-river power plant. The plant’s output of 13 MW of clean electricity is delivered to homes and small businesses. Thanks to this project, about 4 million people have gained access to electricity for the first time. Additionally, the reliable energy supply enables the establishment of new businesses and thus new jobs for the population. Moreover, the project helps to protect the national park’s forests, as the energy is gained from hydropower, eliminating the need for cutting down the local rainforest for the production of charcoal. This also helps to protect the biodiversity and landscape of Virunga National Park.
Caterpillar Energy Solutions Compensates 391 kg of Carbon Equivalents with the Project
The carbon offset project in the Democratic Republic of Congo is certified by ClimatePartner Deutschland GmbH. ClimatePartner enables companies to offset their emissions with recognized, certified climate protection projects. The certifying organization cooperates closely with environmental associations and provides companies with guidance for their climate protection strategies. The hydroelectric project is also certified by TÜV NORD CERT GmbH.
By supporting the climate protection project from April 2022 until at least the end of March 2023, Caterpillar Energy Solutions will be able to offset a total of 391 kg of carbon equivalents. By offsetting unavoidable carbon emissions, Caterpillar Energy Solutions contributes to the reduction of greenhouse emissions, taking on responsibility for the protection of the climate.
