The Lake Kivu with its surface of 2,400 km2 and a depth of 480 m hosts large methane deposits that can be used for eco-friendly energy generation purposes. In March 2024, one of Rwanda’s largest power plants was put into operation at Lake Kivu, supplying the landlocked country with energy. The power plant runs with 19 high-performance gas engines of the type MWM TCG 2032B V16.
