MWM CHP Biogas Station for Epirus Waste Processing Plant in Greece: Eco-Friendly Green Power from Neighborhood Waste Supplies National Power Grid

Following a test run, the 1.56 MWel CHP biogas plant in the state-of-the-art Epirus waste processing plant (WPP Epirus) in Greece went live in November 2019. The CHP biogas station was delivered by the Greek MWM distributor A.EI.M.A. SA. The project had been implemented by the region of Epirus and Aeiforiki of Epirus, a subsidiary TERNA ENERGY GROUP, the largest investor in the Renewable Energy Sources (RES) sector in Greece.

Power Pack: Biogas Plant and CHP Plant Relieve Region and Environment Through Sustainable Waste Utilization
The CHP biogas plant is the first in Greece to produce biogas from solid neighborhood waste. The gas is generated by the waste treatment process and converted to power in the combined heat and power (CHP) plant. The power is fed into the national power grid. The project supports and relieves the region of Epirus in the fields of waste disposal and utilization and generates green energy. Thus, some 100,000 t of waste can be processed, 17,000 t of reusable material can be produced, and 10,800 kWh of power can be generated.
Fully Automated CHP Plant with MWM TCG 2020 Gas Engine Adapts Energy Generation to Waste Quantity in Real Time
The CHP unit consists of an MWM TCG 2020 V16 gas engine that was installed in a MWM container along with all peripheral equipment according to advanced design standards for turnkey operation. The CHP plant is fully automated and adapts its operation in real time to the waste quantity and gas production managed by WPP. The CHP plant produces 1.56 MWel of power and has an electrical efficiency of 42.2 percent. Thanks to the recovery of the heat generated by the CHP plant and its use for other processes of the waste processing plant, the total efficiency is 84.2 percent.
The MWM TCG 2020 gas engines are custom-tailored to the challenges of a dynamic market setting. The model portfolio offers an output range of 1,000 to 2,000 kWel and is thus perfectly suited to the high demands of a broad application spectrum. Moreover, the models stand for efficiency, reliability, flexibility, environmental compatibility, low lifecycle costs, and high profitability.
