New Energy Center for Weinrich Chocolate Factory: MWM Partner SES Energiesysteme Installs New Cogeneration Power Plant for Trigeneration
Mannheim, November 15, 2018
For the production of about 22,500 t of chocolate a year, chocolate manufacturer Weinrich needs power, heat, and cooling throughout the year in order to effectively process its goods. The old steam boiler and the decentralized cooling system have now been replaced with a new cogeneration power plant. The natural gas-fired MWM TCG 2016 V16 gas engine delivers an output of 800 kWel and ensures optimum plant operation. Additionally, an absorption cooler and a peak load boiler that can be activated whenever necessary have been installed within the scope of the modernization measures.

Efficient, Sustainable Energy Management with New Cogeneration Power Plant
The company’s new energy center bundles the generation of power, hot water, warm water, and cold water. With the SES cogeneration plant working with a MWM TCG 2020 gas engine and the new energy center, the chocolate manufacturer Weinrich will be able to cover two thirds of its power demand from its internal production. Moreover, the factory can reduce its carbon emissions by up to 1,924 t/year. Thanks to the plant modernization that took place in summer 2018, the company was able to switch to energy-efficient, eco-friendly production of its goods in autumn 2018.
Since 2016, the climate-neutral chocolate factory Weinrich has compensated carbon emissions in climate protection projects certified by the Gold Standard. In 2016 and 2017, the carbon compensation was performed in the Project Togo. This climate project consistently delivers what sustainability requires: the comprehensive establishment of the bio-capacity of ecosystems to stabilize and strengthen the diversity of life. Project Togo is certified according to Gold Standard criteria. This ensures that the calculated carbon binding also takes place and all additional criteria are duly complied with. The Gold Standard—the most prestigious standard in voluntary climate protection—was founded by leading NGOs and is aligned with the guidelines of the Kyoto Protocol.
SES Energiesysteme will also present the reference project with the modern energy concept of Weinrich chocolate factory as a best practice example at this year’s B.KWK conference in Berlin, Germany, in November.
MWM Gas Engines and Power Gensets
MWM’s product portfolio comprises gas engines and gensets in the output range from 400 kWel to 4,500 kWel. In this way, we can set up power plants with an output of 100,000 kWel and more. The gas engines can be operated with various types of gas, such as natural gas, shale gas, mine gas, biogas, landfill gas, sewage gas, and syngas. They are designed for maximum electrical and thermal efficiency, low operating and service costs, and high reliability and availability. Thus, they reach efficiency levels of more than 90 percent.
