MWM Partner Edina Again Receives ADE Award for Innovative Energy Projects for Decentralized Energy Generation with Cogeneration Plants
MWM Partner Edina Again Receives ADE Award for Innovative Energy Projects for Distributed Energy Generation with Cogeneration Plants
Mannheim, February, 14, 2018
This year, MWM partner Edina received the Association of Decentralised Energy (ADE) award in two significant categories. The awards are granted for outstanding, innovative projects in the field of sustainable energy supply. In 2015 and 2016, Edina had already received several ADE awards, which are highly respected in the energy industry. The award ceremony took place on October 19, 2017, in the Science Museum in London, where ADE celebrated its 50th anniversary with 400 prominent guests from the energy industry.
“Industrial Project of the Decade” Award Goes to Largest CHP installation in a UK Ice Cream factory, Powered by MWM Gas Engines
In the “Industrial Project of the Decade” category, Edina surpassed 10 competing projects, receiving the prestigious ADE award for its cooperation with R&R Ice Cream.
The production plant of R&R Ice Cream in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, currently runs two MWM TCG 2020 V20 gas engines installed by Edina. R&R Ice Cream’s CHP plant is the largest of its kind in UK. With a combined electrical output of 4 MW, the two MWM TCG 2020 gas engines improve the energy security at the site by achieving maximum independence from the public supply grid. The natural gas-fired power gensets are used both for low-temperature hot water (LTHW) and for producing steam.
Apart from increased energy security, other criteria also played a role in the election of the energy project for the ADE award. The ADE jury explained that the 4-MWel CHP plant “was installed at the site to improve energy security but also increased the site’s production by 20 percent as well as reducing its energy bill by £400k and saving 4,800 tons of carbon a year.”

The cogeneration power plant was installed according to high standards: The off-site construction and container transport of the CHP plant greatly reduced the accumulation of waste and the installation time on site. Thus, the cogeneration power plant went live within a very short time.
Vision for the Energy Landscape of Tomorrow: MWM Partner Receives Award for Implementation of a CHP Plant for UK District Energy System
The “Visionary Project of the Year” award for decentralized energy generation projects that glance into the future and deliver a vision for the energy industry of tomorrow was the award that received most nominations. In this category, too, long-standing MWM partner Edina outperformed its competitors, receiving the award for the Gateshead council district energy system.
The ADE jury came to the conclusion that the CHP plant installed for the UK district energy system in March 2017 is a trend-setting project: “The Scheme is one of the most unique projects in the country as it also offers peak power generation to help balance the grid through a mixture of battery storage and combined heat and power with heat storage.”

The MWM 4-MW cogeneration power plant, which enables a unique combination of battery and heat storage, was delivered and installed by Edina. The heat produced by the CHP plant is supplied to customers from the domestic, commercial, and public sector via a two-mile pipeline. The energy center and the network are designed in such a way that they can cover the entire energy demand of future developments in downtown Gateshead. Two additional decentralized energy systems of this type are planned for the future. For this, the Gateshead city council recently received approval for EU funding totaling £5.4 million.
