Energie & Management magazine named the Cogeneration Power Plant (CHP Plant) of Stadtwerke Duisburg the “CHP Plant of the Month” for November 2023
Mannheim, February 1, 2024
The cogeneration power plant of Stadtwerke Duisburg, the municipal utility provider of the city of Duisburg, Germany, was officially commissioned in June 2023. The seven MWM TCG 2032B V16 gas engines support the city of Duisburg in expanding its district heating supply and in generating power according to the demand. Henceforth, the hydrogen-capable MWM gas engines are to be operated with a 25 percent hydrogen admixture in order to enable climate-neutral energy generation. In recognition of this future-oriented concept, “Energie & Management” magazine designated the large cogeneration power plant of Stadtwerke Duisburg as “cogeneration power plant of the month” of November 2023.
Flexible Energy Generation with Combined Heat and Power
The municipal utility provider’s large cogeneration power plant was planned by ETW Energietechnik GmbH and installed in an existing building of the decommissioned coal-fired power plant on the premises of Stadtwerke Duisburg. The seven MWM TCG 2032B V16 gas engines form the core of the cogeneration power plant. The engines each have an electrical output of 4.5 MW and a thermal output of 4.9 MW. Thanks to their flexibility, the gas engines are able to generate heat and power whenever energy is needed. The plant’s modular design facilitates the flexible adjustment of the output in the range from 2.25 to 31.5 MW.
A two-stage exhaust gas heat exchanger was installed in order to make the best possible use of the heat produced by combined heat and power (CHP) generation. The low-temperature mixed cooling water circuit can be used via heat pumps. With the help of an SCR catalyst, the emission limits for air pollutants are complied with.
Hydrogen-Capable MWM Gas Engines to Help Achieve Climate Neutrality
Currently, the gas engines in the new large cogeneration power plant run on natural gas. However, thanks to the hydrogen capability of the MWM gas engines, the system is already designed for future use with a hydrogen admixture of up to 25%vol. “The municipal utility provider’s cogeneration power plant represents another important step in the conversion of the heat and power generation in Duisburg towards climate neutrality”, explains Sören Link, Lord Mayor of Duisburg and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Stadtwerke Duisburg.
About €40 million were invested in the CHP plant. The cogeneration power plant with seven MWM gas engines achieves an efficiency of over 90 percent. With its total output of 31.5 MW, it is capable of covering the annual power demand of 68,000 households. The cogeneration power plant is expected to run 6,000 full load hours a year and generate about 190,000 MWh of heat and power.
Expansion of the District Heating Network for Reliable Heat Supply
The cogeneration power plant of Stadtwerke Duisburg was optimized using a digitized marketing concept to provide flexibility on the power market. The Federal Network Agency the project. Another important future project of Stadtwerke Duisburg is expanding the district heating network and providing carbon-neutral heat, e.g. by means of hydrogen-fired gas engines. Currently, more than 70,000 households in Duisburg heat their homes with district heating. “In the coming years, we want to significantly expand our district heating network and our district heating production so that we can produce enough heat to connect up to 15,000 more households”, says Andreas Gutschek, Executive Board Member responsible for Infrastructure and Digitization, Stadtwerke Duisburg.
